Library Lovers Day

Known as a time for romantics and lovers world wide, February 14 (Valentine’s Day), has now been claimed by Library Lovers as a day to celebrate the objects of their special affection – Australia’s libraries.

To help you understand what a library means to you, below are some quotes from famous Library Lovers around the world:

Susan Stephenson (The Book Chook)
“Libraries have been a lighthouse in my life.”
Neil Gaiman (author)
“Libraries are our friends.”
Saul Bellow (author)
“People can lose their lives in libraries. They ought to be warned.”
Germaine Greer (journalist & academic)
“A library is a place where you can lose your innocence without losing your virginity.”
Walter Cronkite (American broadcast journalist)
“Whatever the cost of our libraries, the price is cheap compared to that of an ignorant nation.”
Ray Bradbury (author)
“Without libraries what have we? We have no past and no future.”
E.B White (author)
“A library is a good place to go when you feel unhappy, for there, in a book, you may find encouragement and comfort.”
Rita Mae Brown (writer & feminist)
“When I got my library card, that was when my life began.”
Sarah J. Maas (author)
“Libraries were full of ideas–perhaps the most dangerous and powerful of all weapons.”
Stephen Fry (actor, writer)
“An original idea. That can’t be too hard. The library must be full of them.”

  1. This is such a great idea! My library started doing this last year. It was such a success that we’re doing it again this year!

  2. Well done Gawler and Evanston Libraries for your lovely displays and gift wrapped books! I looked forward to unwrapping my book again this year and again was surprised with another lovely Australian title.
